Our surroundings
In the heart of the Dronne Valley , our house is just five minutes from Bourdeilles , with its twin castles (a Medieval fortress and a Renaissance chateau) which stand proudly on cliff tops overhanging the river.
Nearby is picturesque Brantome with its ancient streets hosting a colourful weekly market, Benedictine Abbey and troglodyte caves. Encircled by the Dronne river, the town has come to be known as the green Venice of the Perigord.
Our unmatchable gastronomy includes such delicacies as foie gras , truffles, duck confit and magret, and wild cep mushrooms. All available in the numerous local restaurants which range from the most simple to the Michelin starred. As well as, of course , in the daily markets and the many food shops of the area.
Only slightly further afield are the Vezere Valley, a Unesco classified World Heritage Site, with treasures extending from Lascaux to Les Eyzies de Tayac, containing some of the world’s major pre-historic cave paintings. There are the vineyards of Saint Emilion ( Bordeaux ) and of Bergerac; the beautiful meandering Dordogne River with its many fortified Bastide towns; and the Medieval and Renaissance town of Sarlat . Not to forget the 1500 Medieval fortresses and Renaissance chateaux.
